When potential clients come to Specialty Smiles to learn more about orthodontic treatment, a big chunk of the time is spent trying to get them to wrap their heads around just how braces work, not that we think it’s a chore or anything, but we genuinely believe that the more they know, the better decisions they’ll make, and the more involved they’ll be in their own care. If you’re thinking about getting traditional braces or just looking around for options for yourself or someone in your family in Miramar, or anywhere else for that matter, then we’re more than happy to sit down and break down the basics of straightening teeth. Braces for Adults offer discreet, modern solutions that make it easier than ever to enhance your smile at any age. Many adults choose clear aligners or ceramic braces to achieve lasting results with minimal visibility.
Now, the idea behind braces is actually pretty simple, it really has been for centuries now, even though the tech and techniques have made huge strides over the years. The basic idea is to just apply a gentle, steady pressure on your teeth over a long period of time, and the bone that supports them will gradually change shape because of that. It sounds maybe too straightforward to work, but it’s been helping people get straighter teeth for ages now. Invisalign® uses clear, comfortable aligners to gently guide teeth into place without metal brackets or wires. Each set of aligners is custom-made to fit your teeth and designed for convenience and comfort.
The whole system is made up of a few key parts that all work together in harmony. We use a special dental adhesive to bolt metal or ceramic brackets to the front of each tooth, simple, but they’re the key to making the whole thing happen. We then use these brackets as kind of handles to guide the teeth in the right direction. An arch wire is threaded through all the brackets and ties them all together, and that’s the crucial bit, because that wire is what actually puts the pressure on the teeth to move them. We hold it all in place with tiny elastic bands or little metal clips that are built into the brackets.
At Specialty Smiles we carefully think through where to put the brackets on each tooth, after all, it’s not just about slapping them on and hoping for the best. The angle and position are super important. We consider how each tooth needs to move and make sure we put the brackets in the right spot for that to happen. That level of accuracy really makes a difference, it helps make sure that your teeth are moving in a quick and effective way during treatment.
The arch wire is the real workhorse when it comes to shifting teeth around. It’s made from a special kind of metal alloy that can remember its shape, we bend and mold it to make it look like the ideal arch shape that we want your teeth to follow, and then it tries to go back to its original shape when we put it in the brackets on your crooked or misaligned teeth. As it does that, it drags the teeth along with it, trying to straighten itself out and get your teeth into the perfect position.
When we first start treatment, we usually go with some tiny, flexible wires that aren’t too harsh on the body. As your teeth start to move and the treatment goes on, we move up to stronger, stiffer wires that can apply a bit more force and get some bigger changes done. These wires are designed to work together to move your teeth quickly, but also to keep the pain to a minimum. We check how you’re doing and decide when it’s time to move on to the next wire in the sequence every time you come in for an adjustment.
It’s actually kind of interesting how your mouth works biologically. When you put pressure on a tooth, the bone on one side of the root gets squished while the bone on the other side stretches. And what happens as a result is that the body breaks down bone cells on the side that’s getting squished and builds new ones on the side that’s getting stretched. So basically, the tooth socket is getting remodeled to fit the new position of the tooth. That’s why orthodontic work takes months instead of days, we need to give this biological process time to happen safely.
Sometimes we need to bring in other bits and pieces to get the job done, depending on what needs fixing. You can fix your bite by putting in some elastic rubber bands between your upper and lower teeth. These elastics make forces that regular braces alone can’t, especially when it comes to getting the upper and lower jaws into alignment with each other. And for certain movements, like closing gaps or turning teeth, you might need some springs, coils or other special attachments.
Depending on what’s needed, we might need to use a few other tools in our kit, expanders to make the upper jaw bigger, headgear to help younger patients’ jaws grow, or temporary anchoring devices to give us some stable points to move other teeth around. Every single case is different, and we change the way we treat each one based on what needs to be done. We deal with all sorts of orthodontic issues in Miramar, and we adapt our treatment to fit each one.
The amount of time treatment takes can vary a lot from person to person. Simple cases might only need 12 to 18 months, but more complicated ones can take 2-3 years or more. The main thing that determines how fast things go is biology, we can’t speed up the process of remodeling bone without putting teeth and other structures at risk. And of course, how well the patient cooperates is a big factor too, broken brackets, missed appointments or not wearing the right elastics can all make things take longer.
Regular appointments for adjustments are really important if treatment is going to work. Patients usually come in every 4-8 weeks while they’re wearing braces. We check on how your teeth are moving, change wires when necessary, and make any other tweaks that need making to keep treatment on track. These appointments don’t take long, but they’re really key to keeping your treatment goals on target.
We’re always looking at new methods and materials here at Specialty Smiles, and that’s making braces a lot more comfortable and effective than they used to be. Bracket designs have come a long way, they’re now smaller and smoother, which means they don’t irritate lips and cheeks as much. And wire technology has gotten better too, it can apply more consistent forces with less pain. So even though the basic principles are still the same, wearing braces is now a lot easier on the patient.
Retention is super important after active treatment is over and the braces are taken off. Your teeth have moved, but the bone and tissues around them need time to settle down. If you don’t hold them in place, they’ll tend to drift back to their original positions, so we give you some retainers to help keep them where they’re supposed to be while the bone around the new tooth positions gets remodeled and strengthened. And all you have to do is follow the instructions for looking after your smile, that way you can protect the investment you’ve made in it.
We believe that understanding just how braces work can give our patients a real appreciation for why certain parts of treatment are just a must have. The science behind it all makes it clear why treatment is a bit of a time investment, why keeping those appointments is really non-negotiable, and just how crucial that retainer is going to be.
