When people come in for their first appointment to get started with orthodontic treatment, one of the first things they always want to know is how long it’s going to take. They want to know how long they’ll be stuck with these braces, how many adjustment appointments they’ll have to sit through, and whether they’ll have to stick to those fussy food rules. We get it, you want a clear idea of what you’re getting into so you can start planning ahead, whether that’s mapping out where to go on vacation with the family, or figuring out when to schedule senior pics. Having a solid idea of what the treatment timeline looks like helps you set realistic expectations and stay motivated throughout the whole process. InBrace® offers a hidden, behind-the-teeth alternative that straightens your smile discreetly and efficiently. This advanced technology moves your teeth naturally without the need for visible braces.
Now, when it comes to how long it takes to get braces off, the answer can vary pretty widely from person to person. Some people are done in just a year, while others need three years or even more to get the results they’re after. And it really all comes down to how complicated your case is. If you’re just dealing with some minor spacing issues or a bit of crowding, you’ll probably be sorted out a lot faster than if you’ve got worse bite problems or alignment issues. When you come in for a consultation with us at Specialty Smiles, we’ll give you a rough idea of how long things might take, based on what we see when we do the exam. We offer a range of Types of Braces to suit every preference, from traditional metal to advanced clear options. Our orthodontic specialists will help you choose the ideal treatment for your smile goals.
The reality is, the length of treatment is going to be directly affected by how bad the crowding or spacing is. If you’ve only got a few teeth that need to make a tiny move, it’s going to be a heck of a lot faster than if you’ve got a lot of teeth that need to do a lot more work to get into their right positions. We’ve had some patients from Miramar get their teeth completely straightened out in just 15 months because their problems weren’t too insurmountable. On the other hand, some people have taken two and a half years or more because their teeth had to move and rotate a ton. And with complicated cases, we often have to break treatment down into several stages to get all the different bits of the alignment and bite sorted out.
Most of the time, problems with biting make orthodontic treatment drag on longer than expected. To fix an overbite, underbite or crossbite, you need to move the teeth and also get the upper and lower jaw working together right. You can’t rush it, or you’ll ruin the results. The elastics we give you to fix your bite work only if you wear them all the time, and your jaw responds to steady, gentle pressure over a long time. We usually see that patients who really stick to the instructions for wearing the elastics will see their bite get better on about the timeline we’ve said it will.
Age can affect how long treatment takes, but surprisingly, not that much. Kids and teens who’ve still got growing jaws often get results a little bit faster because their bones are a bit more responsive to the orthodontic work. Adult patients’ jaw bones are fully grown and take a bit longer to move, which can slow treatment down a bit. We’ve definitely seen very compliant adult patients finish treatment right on time, but some teenagers who just can’t seem to follow the rules take longer than we expected. To be honest, age isn’t the key factor as much as how your body responds to the treatment and how well you follow the plan.
How long your time with braces lasts really depends on how well you stick to the instructions for wearing all the appliances. You’ve got to use those rubber bands, headgear and other orthodontic tools, or they just won’t work. We’ve seen treatment timelines go out by six months or more if patients don’t wear their elastics as they’re supposed to. Every day you don’t wear what you’re supposed to is a day you’re not getting closer to your goal. The patients who finish treatment the fastest are usually the ones that don’t miss a beat and stick to the plan without forgetting to wear their appliances.
Regular check ups keep your treatment right on track. We usually see patients every 4-8 weeks to check on how things are going and make any changes to the wires and brackets that are needed. Missing a session or having to reschedule them can throw off the whole schedule. You’ve got to keep an eye on your teeth and make the changes needed to keep them moving in the right direction. We know life can get crazy, especially for families with a million different schedules to juggle, but making these appointments a priority is the key to finishing treatment on time.
If a bracket breaks or a wire gets damaged, it’s gonna take longer to finish up. When a bracket comes loose, your teeth stop moving until we can get it sorted out. A few repairs during treatment can add months to the overall timeline. That’s why we stress being careful with foods that are hard and sticky, the temporary dietary restrictions are in place to protect your braces and make sure your treatment goes as smoothly as possible. Patients who can keep clear of the foods that cause problems almost never need to head to the emergency room for repairs.
How long it takes to get your braces off in Miramar also depends on what you’re hoping to get out of your smile. Some patients want every single tooth to be perfectly in line, while others are happy to just fix the major problems with alignment. We talk about your goals during your consultation and throughout your treatment, and once we know what you’re aiming for, we can make a plan to help you get there. The thing is, it takes longer to reach more ambitious goals.
After your braces come off, you’ll need to wear a retainer to keep your teeth in their new places. This retention phase isn’t technically part of the active treatment time, but it’s super important for keeping your results safe. We only call treatment a success when your teeth have stayed in their correct, new positions.
We keep a close eye on our patients’ progress here at Specialty Smiles and let them know how things are going. We make sure to keep you posted if things are moving faster or slower than we thought. Our goal is to help you get a beautiful, healthy smile in the most efficient timeframe possible, and we’re never gonna rush at the expense of quality. Braces will give you a healthy smile and more confidence in what you’re smiling about for the rest of your life.
