What Can’t You Eat With Braces In Miramar?

Getting braces is a big deal, it’s a step in the right direction for a better smile, but it also means making some pretty significant changes to your daily routine for a little while. One of the things people at Specialty Smiles hear most often is what can I eat with braces? And honestly, we can understand why you’d be worried, food is a huge part of our lives, and socialising is even more complicated when you’re eating out. But the good news is that even though there are some foods you can’t have, there’s still plenty of tasty stuff out there that you can still enjoy. 6 Month Braces provide a fast, effective solution for improving smiles in as little as six months. It’s a great option for patients seeking quick results before an important event or milestone.

One of the biggest no-nos are hard and crunchy foods, the kind that can break your brackets or bend your wires if you’re not careful. We’ve had patients break their braces by snacking on hard pretzels or biting into an apple a bit too enthusiastically, or trying to crunch on ice or a hard candy. Yeah, that’s just a recipe for disaster. So we always advise people to cut up their hard fruits and veggies into bite-sized bits instead of going straight in for a big bite. And trust us, it’s worth it, the less pressure on your braces, the better. Retainers help maintain your beautiful new smile by keeping teeth aligned after orthodontic treatment. Wearing retainers as recommended ensures your results remain consistent and long-lasting.

But then there’s the sticky and chewy problem, foods like caramel, gum, or other sweets that can get stuck in your braces. And trust me, it’s not fun trying to get those things out. It’s not just annoying either, it can actually cause real problems for your treatment. We’ve had patients come in for emergency visits because they got a bit carried away with a sweet treat at a birthday party or the movie theatre. It’s a short-term sacrifice for a healthier smile, but it’s worth it.

Living in Miramar is amazing because you get to try all sorts of amazing foods from different cultures. And we don’t want our patients to feel like they’re missing out on that. The good news is that with a few tweaks, you can still enjoy all your faves. You can have tacos, just go for soft shells instead of hard. Pizza is okay as long as the crust isn’t too hard or chewy. Most protein options, pasta dishes and rice bowls are all still fair game. And we even encourage our patients to get creative in the kitchen, find some new soft food recipes and try something new.

Now, some foods are not strictly off-limits but you do need to take a bit more care with them. Cut that corn off the cob before you eat it. Take the meat off the bone of chicken wings or ribs. And maybe rip up that tough, crusty bread sandwich instead of biting into it whole. But after a few weeks of getting used to eating with braces, these changes become second nature. Most of our patients say they don’t even think about them anymore, they just do it as a reflex.

We also need to talk about sugar, it doesn’t directly hurt your braces but it does make it more likely you’ll get cavities or white spots on your teeth. And with braces, the food and bacteria can hide a lot more easily. So, we always tell our Miramar patients to take care of their teeth during treatment, it’s key to getting a healthy, beautiful smile in the end.

At Specialty Smiles, we give all our patients a full list of foods to avoid and some practical tips on how to handle mealtime, eating out at restaurants and dealing with all the social situations that come with it. It’s a bit of a change, but the temporary sacrifices are worth it for the long-term benefits of orthodontic treatment. Most people get used to their new eating habits pretty quickly and find that the rules become pretty easy to follow over time. We’ll still be here to answer your questions and help you along the way. And when it’s all over, every careful choice you made will be worth it for that beautiful, straight smile.
